Stimulus Watch: Forks of the Road Heritage Trail. This project would greatly enhance one of the primary gateways to our city by creating an African American/Ethnic Heritage Trail along a stretch of St. Catherine ...

  • standog1 · 10 months ago
Several projects within the stimulus concept are noble and worth while. The only problem is that our country is on the verge of a financial collapse. During these extreme and CRITICAL times we do not have the option to print more funny money for worthy projects. Spending money when you are neck-deep in debt does not work for individuals, social groups, companies (large or small) and it does not work for city, county, state or federal governments. We need to STOP THE DEFICIT SPENDING NOW.

The debt we are creating for our children and grandchildren is totally unfair to them and very selfish of us. I am a "Baby Boomer". My parents brought me into a world when this country believed in fiscal responsibility and it was rich. We had such a surplus of cash we lent it to other countries. Well, the Baby Boomers have not only decimated our parent's wealth, but we are creating an unfair financial burden on the next generations. We are pathetic and greedy. We need to put the American Government on a budget and some how make them work within that budget. All unnecessary spending needs to come to an immediate halt. More spending, no matter what label you put on it will only inflict more injury. We are headed down the wrong road to recovery. We need to stop and turn around.

Most of the projects slated for Federal Funding are either City, County, or State Projects. These projects should be funded from the appropriate money pool. If the pool is empty, like the Federal pool is, ... don't dive in!.

This is outrageous!!!! 99% of these posters can't read!!!!

    1) The project request is not for $600m. It is closer to $1m. This site is incorrect as stated below the title.
    2) ALL PROJECTS ON THIS SITE ARE NOT IN THE STIMULUS PACKAGE!

Retards. Read the home page. These projects have been submitted by the public to this web site. This web site is not the stimulus package. Jesus H Christ.
  • GrouchyOldFart · 10 months ago
    Nice writing there Jim...

Doesn't matter if it is in the package or not. Even at the paltry sum of $1 Million it is a waste of taxpayer money.

So Jim, I really didn't expect to hear from you again. How was the Koolaid?
  • ptutini · 10 months ago
    Jim,

Take a deep breath and try to relax. The responses on this website express the opinions of taxpayers about how and where they want their money spent. Whether or not this stimulates the economy is debatable, but its intrinsic value is questionable.
  • Joe Perkins · 9 months ago
Some of the items on here may not be totally correct but many are, that my friend is the very scary part. Yours and my money is being spent without our consent.
  • aguiltywhitey · 8 months ago
I vote to raise the amount to 7 trillion dollars. Our African-American heritage is worth so much more than that. Jesse where are you??
  • Norton · 8 months ago
Regardless of whether the money gets spent or not makes no difference most of the country. The true outrage should be that ALL tax payers are being asked to pay for somebody elses pork.
  • Lewis · 10 months ago

I think every city in America should get $1,000,000 for what ever then. That would be fair, right? How many cities are there? Pork Pork Pork Pork Pork Pork Pork Pork and more PORK!
  • Jared · 10 months ago
Retards? Don't you think you're language is unnecessary? I didn't not know Jesus had a middle name. What does the H stand for? By the way, you are correct. The site does specifically state that these are NOT part of the package. They are, however, some of the most riduculous programs that I have ever seen. 600m or 1m this is still ridiculous.
  • portlanddave · 10 months ago
    I think it's Harold.

Anyway, yes, it's a costly project, but it's kind of interesting. Plus, I love the quote from Mayor Jake Middleton:

“Six hundred million? That could build a highway across the South. I don’t even know where that figure came from."

“That’s crazy. Who in their right mind would ask for $600 million?”

It sounds like the kind of place I might like to visit. A nice place to reflect on the slave market, and remember that no matter how bad the government may seem to suck, we're still doing better in some ways than we once were.
  • firerunner · 9 months ago

I find the use of the word "retard" appalling. They were born the way they are, have no recourse, and should be treated and respected as fellow humans. That aside, your spelling is inconsistent. Make it to 3rd grade?
All that aside, this porkulus bill is bull. Taxpayer dollars to pay for "creating an African American/Ethnic Heritage Trail "? That's BS. I could think of a hundred better uses.

This is in reference to NATION's remark..lemme tell you about racism...I recently lost my mother due to years of bad health...she owned a home that is made of concrete cinder blocks that was built about 80 yrs ago. She qualified for Medicaid because her income was below povertry level (she was white), she was in the nursing home for a yr before her death. I being her only child recently received a wonderful letter from Medicaid seeking recovery for her medical bills, and they valued her home and 1 acre of land at approx. a little over $21,000. That should tell you that her home wasn't a mansion by any means. My point is this...I just wonder if Medicaid seeks recovery for all these young women..whether black or white that have Medicaid and no jobs and foodstamps and have anywhere from 2-10 children that are covered under Medicaid????????? I just bet my tushy they don't....in fact I know they don't. So what makes it right for someone like my mother who worked most all of her life and when she needed assistance with her medical bills they want to take her home away...how does this make it right...so don't mention racisim because I feel that because of her race she is being done wrong for trying to have something in life...and u know what...I can't do a dang thing about it...I don't have $21,000 to give to Medicaid, and if I did..I wouldn't want to it would only allow other girls to continue to have children that they can't raise...just say I'm angry as h$ll....so let's build that trail go ahead..do it ...and you will be laughed at for a long time as the politicians that truly lost there minds..hahah

  • Ryan Kennedy · 10 months ago
There is an error. The calculations are not correct. The jobs and cost amount is off by a HUGE magnitude.
  • natchez · 10 months ago
The City of Natchez did not request this amount for the Heritage Trails. A decimal point was moved in the transition from data entry to report, obviously, because the amount requested was $60 thousand, NOT $60 million. The total cost of this project has been estimated by the City of Natchez Engineering Department at 3 million TOTAL.
  • Donna · 10 months ago
Even if it's true that this was a misprint and the correct amount is $1 million dollars, my fear is that these spend-crazy Democrats (and renegade Republicans) will go ahead and allocate the entire $6 million dollars, and then "divert" the excess into their pockets and/or the pockets of other officials and politicians. Does anyone else believe this is a possibility?
  • Whyputaname · 10 months ago
It is true and it happens all of the time. For the most part projects like these usually are bidded on and for the most part go to the lowest bidder.

In the end the project may cost a 1/4 to half of that and the rest goes into the pocket of the politician.

I'm tired of 'slave' this and 'black' that! I never had any slaves! My folks weren't even here before 1900. When they got here, they were practically slaves themselves. They didn't start complaining and whining for the government to help them. They were too busy working!
  • Nixxi · 5 months ago
Grossly unfair for folks who have little, had no ancestors wealthy enough to own slaves or not yet in America, to be expected to atone for the sins of those who had slaves,(who most likely were sold into slavery by their fellow countrymen). My ancestors were hardworking immigrants who came to America for what it used to be, not what it is becoming.

We had something like this in Southern Minnesota, was roundly opposed, once built it fostered tremendous economic development and resuscitated a fairly depressed area of the state, which has continued for 20 years. Don't know if this is make work or a legitimate attempt at economic development. It is ironic that a lot of the projects railed against are proposed for Red states.
  • John Galt · 10 months ago
It's not "irony" at all. It's evidence that the people in the red states oppose wasteful spending, and robbing their children and grandchildren, no matter whether it benefits a red state or not. There are plenty of these racially themed parks and museums all over the south. They are a total waste of money. Come see for yourself
  • Yehudit · 10 months ago
Leaving aside the worth of the project, $600 MILLION DOLLARS for a few plaques and repairing some cobblestones? (What else are you going to put here? Even building a giant new museum from scratch wouldn't cost $600 million.

I have no problem with marking any historical site. Different ethnic groups have different histories in this country and they are all interesting and part of our heritage. What is outrageous about this project is spending any more than a few thousand dollars on it.
  • Keith · 10 months ago
At a cost of $9.23 million per worker this doesn't even seem cost effective? What is the trail made out of gold bricks? To borrow a famous line. SERIOUSLY!
  • BLove · 10 months ago
This expenditure doesn't seem very cost effective..I would like to see more people benefit for the amount and like others have expressed let's look at creating jobs that will be long term and/or provide training and help.
  • Char · 10 months ago
These are temporary jobs. If we are going to spend that kind of money, we better invest in projects that will help sustain jobs over decades. Nice project if you can afford it. We can't! I'd rather see 1/4 that amount given to the residents in the form of grants to get an education, job training and they would benefit far more.

$600M and sixty-five jobs? For a trail? How is this infrastructure, and at roughly $10M of expenditure per job created, how does this stimulate the overall economy?
  • Randy · 10 months ago
We need to create JOBS, not build trails and waste money. Roads and bridges create jobs, and keep people working. If we don't fix the roads, we'll have to ride bikes because you will need a mountain bike to get anywhere. I don't know why we keep electing the same people that don't do whats needed. Is it something in the water in this city?
  • Midgey · 10 months ago
The cost is ridiculous even if the project was a good one. At 600 million dollars and 65 jobs that's over 900,000 dollars per worker. That's asking for fraud and graft to happen. Deep six this one.

Adams county is in desparate need of industry that will bring thousands of jobs to the city and county. The town is dying from the shutdown of John Manville/International Paper/Armstrong/Diamond National/Holsum Bakery, etc. The loss of jobs has made a dramatic impact on a beautiful city and left the town without hope for the young people. Most young people leave home and never come back to invest in their community and hometown.

Casinos create very few jobs and take the money away from the city.

The real question here is who is getting rich off of this one?

That kind of money could build many, many miles of four-lane interstate highway. This is obviously a fradulently estimated project, with people waiting in the wings to cash in on it. A similar project "Walkway over the Hudson River" or whatever it's called, in Poughkeepsie, NY has receive the go ahead (I don't believe any funding is coming from the "stimulus" plan) with a little more than a mile of walkway, over an existing railroad bridge, being billed at something like 50 million dollars. Let's face it people, if taxpayer money is involved, it's going to either be fraudulently, or incompetently used, and often both.

ALL Pork and social engineering....cut taxes for those who pay taxes, period.
  • SunEnergy · 10 months ago
Not that I'm against cultural monuments...and do suggest a small portion of the zillions requested go to something that will attract young people to stay in the area and be proud of their home.

With the vast remainder (not likely unless you can do a better job of justifying the amounts...) I urge you to fund micro loans. Historically, self employed people develop small businesses that bring about lots of permanent jobs. The loan might be as little as 5,000, but it's near zero interest and MUST be paid back...otherwise no more loans for 10 years unless steep penalties are levied.

You might think $5,000 is chump change, but it might be enough for a commercial solar oven made from plywood, reflective insulation board, glass found at recycle centers. A small solar panel driving a small fan provides the air movement required to make it work. An oven of say 4 x 8 feet can house many loaves of bread. How much does a loaf cost in your grocery store? Several of these home made ovens promise a good return for an enterprising young person who's given a chance with a micro-loan. Ebay owner has provided many millions of dollars to his native India, in the form of micro-loans. Maybe he can match the US Govt. micro-loan project to areas such as this.

Other very promising, low tech items such as solar thermal collectors could also bring in the bucks. These can provide hot water, hot air (in winter), and be the hot source for absorption chillers (air conditioning and refrigeration). The panels can be made with a minimum of skill.

Here in Calif. we make motor systems for bicycles...and these could also be installed in this area on bikes. Low cost transportation that gets you around just fine. Most people spend more on their blasted cars than their kids! Go to China, India, Europe, Japan...the bicycle is a respected means of transportation for folks who in many cases have a higher standard of living than we "rich" Americanos. We've let our politicians run our economy into the ground...factories moving abroad...the military complex taking jobs that would otherwise benefit us here rather than get blown up abroad. Figures. No one even talks about the cost of the war and how getting out will be a GREAT stimulus for the economy! Let those in far off countries fight their own wars while we defend our own soil against foreign threats. The 911 terrorists who piloted the planes into the buildings were trained by us at our own flying schools! The FBI knew of threats but they did not follow up...so now we have multiple wars that take or maim our young and bankrupt us.

We need keen business minds to oversee this stimulus...not the usual blood sucking attorneys posing as civic leaders. We've got to pay the loans back or run the risk of foreigners either taking more of our assets by default, or writing off their losses once they realize we won't pay back (and we're then barefoot since all our shoes now come from China).

  • SunEnergy · 9 months ago
    Hey Chuck!

I'm in full agreement with you regarding the irresponsibility of California State. The government's broke and don't think raising the sales tax (and other taxes) is going to make it worse. As for illegals making it that much more difficult...I couldn't agree more...and it's not just Mexicans. Asians, Middle Easterners, South Americans, Europeans, Africans...anyone who lands and doesn't leave when their visa expires should be deported. A friend in Dallas was telling me they rounded up a slew of Chinese illegals there...had to support them until their case went to trial...the judge ordered them deported but China wouldn't accept anyone with a one way ticket. So guess what? They're back in town! There's also those who get the red carpet treatment by large corporations who claim they can't find trained professionals in our country...or rather trained pros that'll work as cheap as they want to pay. They're here too...legally. How many engineers born in the US are out of work now? How many times do you call an 800 number and get someone that sounds E. Indian, Central American, Phillipinian, Chinese?? These are all jobs we lost along with our shoe and clothing workers, plus who knows what else.

As for 'paddling' to Texas, if I had a month or two spare time I'd do it to show you people there are other ways of skinin' a cat. I'm not giving up my car for long distances, but for local 10 to 20 mile trips, an e-bike is just fine...saves me loads of cash and keeps the cut throat greedy doctors away.

As for the dems getting us into this fix...who ran the show the past 8 years? Did we get any oil out of the Iraq deal? How many billions and lives has it cost us so far? Course, you can believe Russ and the rest of the sore losers it was Clinton and Carter's fault we're in the mess. Reagan did absolutely nothing after our men and women in Lebanon were blown up...pulled out and let the terrorists take over the place. We could have stopped them back then before they got established also in Africa and Europe, but Ronny was too busy smiling and making folks believe his Hollywood vision of life. Clinton sat on the fence and did whatever it took to stay in this position, including support for the deregulation of banks. If he thought this was a good move for the country, he was an idiot. If he didn't think it was a good move, then what does that make him?

The issue of making it possible for low income folks to get loans was well intentioned, but fool hearty if the banks didn't back themselves up in the event customers couldn't make payments down the line. Was it the poor folks' fault or the greedy loan sharks who put us in this mess? Many of these folks have stuck with their upside down loans unless they're in a bankrupt state like Calif. or Mich. where the property is worth a third of what they paid for it. Hell, I'd jump ship too under the circumstances...go to another state like you say...whatever it takes to survive! I'm just hoping there'll be someone in Calif. that could take Huey Long's place... In case he's before your time, run a search and read Wikipedia.

I second the proposal for micro-loans. A wonderful stimulus for grass-roots capitalism that is effective around the globe for lifting people out of poverty by their own efforts. it is a LOAN. They pay it back. This whole "stimulus" project should consist of tax breaks for business and micro-loans - that would create FAR more jobs than this pork.

  • Mike · 10 months ago
Actually, "Slavery" had very little to do with it...It was more of an issue of States rights to govern themselves. While many will say "slavery" was one of those issues to how a state conducted themselves, it was more along the line of the Federal Government TELLING States how they will and will not act, taxes and commerce. Sort of what we are seeing now. Also see 10th amendment of the US Consititution
  • jaxiizikk · 10 months ago
As you are correct about the issue of States wanting rights to govern themselves, this concept was from slavery. The north wanted the Missouri Compromise, the south didn't, the south wanted the Kansas-Nebraska act, the North didn't..., it goes on and on, but you are right, Slavery wasn't the only issue of that.

Its like paying someone to dig a hole in your yard, then paying someone to fill that hole up...This project is pointless as well as the other ones that private enterprise could do just fine if the government would just stop taxing us so much..
  • 3on23 · 10 months ago
I pass by the Forks site almost everyday. There is a sign and another informational kiosk that explains the site. What else is needed that could cost that much money? For that amount we could add some public restrooms around the downtown area, make all the sidewalks handicapped accessible, repave the streets, and still have money left over to build a small building at that site to house artifacts, photos or whatever else would need to be displayed. We need industry, we need jobs that pay above minimum wage, we need better teachers, and more police. This amount could be spread out to help so many that need it instead of making a "trail".

I'm a relative of Merriweather Lewis and if all the Lewis and Clark stuff had been set aside to make way for necessary expenses, so it goes. Everyone should be aware of their heritage and efforts like this to promote understanding of black heritage are fine, I learn things that way and am glad. Thing is, they aren't necessities and those things have to come first. I don't think out of state taxpayers need to cover the expenses either.

Whoever submitted this request evidently didn't hear their new president's speech Jan 8th when he said, QUOTE: "That also means an economic recovery plan that is free from earmarks and pet projects. I understand that every member of Congress has ideas on how to spend money. Many of these projects are worthy, and benefit local communities. But this emergency legislation must not be the vehicle for those aspirations. This must be a time when leaders in both parties put the urgent needs of our nation above our own narrow interests." Although, after seeing all the PORK...such as this... added to the stimulus package, and seeing in his Feb 6th speech that he has not only approved but is pushing it's acceptance with all the power he has, just proves he didn't mean what he said after all. Maybe he needs to go back and read his speech from a month ago.
  • Stephen · 10 months ago
Obama had no intention of "pulling the pork". The only pork he pulled was his own after he lied his way into office. All of this waste and $4,000,000,000 are going to ACORN.
OBAMA is just like the rest of them (politicians). I don't even want to get into the the 1st African American President thing. That man has no love for our country and this is his first step in setting it up to implode. AfricanAmerican, Italian American, Mexican American; bull crap. You are American or you ought to be leaving. Thats one less person we need to spend the pork money on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He lied to all of you who voted for him. There is no money anywhere in this bill for saving the lives of unborn children, but he sent $4,000,000,000 to Mexico to reinitiate the "Mexican Treaty". We fund abortions for mexicans, in mexico so they can control their population. But not one dime for saving a life. By the way, when your parents and grandparents get up in age and need hospitilization, under Obama, the Doctors will be forced to decide if it is a "waste of money" to save them. There is your hero, killing your parents and grandparents.

I apologize for unloading on this particular person, but I just had to say it somewhere. If you voted for him, you were duped.
  • 4js100 · 9 months ago
I guess Obama missed the memo about the 6,000 deaths in Mexico last year by the drug cartel. Isn't that controlling their population enough?

Psssssst Stephen small correction He lied to all who voted for him is WRONG...
He LIED to EVERYONE but for ever 100 who belived him and voted for him ...
98 of us knowing his record did not also as you mentioned the PORKER does
send LOTS of money outside the the USA to stimulate them and also create jobs
I am sure the Democrats are looking for ways they can vote next election If the currant
plan to count more votes than has voters and not ONE republican vote cast in a whole

Yes. Obama made another of his pretty little teleprompter speeches at one of his Pep Rallies and got all of his little cheerleader's fired up again by promising an earmark, pork free recovery plan.

Then Sen. Chuck Schumer - D-NY came on the scene and said--"and let me say this to all of the chattering class that so much focuses on those little, tiny, yes, Porky Amendments; The American people really don't care."

This was after Nancy Palosi took a pledge on- I believe it was Jan. 11, 2009 - where she pledged that in the Obama Administration there would be No Pork.

And this after Obama vowed to do away with lobbiest's- althought at the time I didn't realize that he planned to do away with them by giving them jobs in his administration---

Are we beginning to see a pattern of lies and deception here?
Well, some of us have noticed the development of this pattern all along. Some are beginning to see it, much like the picture in a jigsaw puzzle coming to light as each piece is added, and some will never see it through the glaze and haze of stardust.

In the meantime, local projects are now classified as "Crisis Projects" Greedy people who have learned to "Oink" in unison with the Liberal Pig Farmers in DC are leaping into the trough even though they don't need to be fed. All at the taxpayers expense.

Obama's "Truth Doctrine". We should never forget that Fairy Tale!

First off, if the community is falling apart because all the businesses left what's the point in keeping it around? Encourage whoever wants to leave, to pursue a new home somewhere they are more likely to find future employment. It happens. Cities are living, breathing entities that expand and contract through natural ebb and flow. Or, just use the money to reimburse corporate taxes and try to lure some foreign company to build a non-union manufacturing facility. That would be a much better permanent solution with sustainability.
  • HattieB · 10 months ago
Why is this needed, I am beginning to see this stimulus as a "Temp Agency" what happens to those employed after these pork projects are completed..... Duh! they are unemployed.... did anyone take this into consideration when writing this piece of .............not sure what it is
  • Laura Dowdy · 10 months ago
Well........ Beautification.........should be done by those in the community who want to look at it. Volunteer labor.........community pooled resources that perhaps be "tax-write-offs" for the donors.......
HOW ABOUT USING "WELFARE RECIPIENTS" TO PERFORM ALL OF THE LABOR? Better yet, why not cut off a large majority of "welfare recipients" who are able bodied and continue to make children that they cannot afford? How about only helping the "needy", not the "greedy"?
IF WELFARE WERE LEGITIMATELY REFORMED, THERE WOULD BE MORE TAX DOLLARS AVAILABLE FOR REASONABLE CAUSES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you people not read the previous posts before ranting? The city asked for 3.1 million, which was originally $600,000 (six-hundred THOUSAND). This stupid website has been contacted by the Natchez local paper SEVERAL times to correct this, but they are enjoying all the additional "hits" on their site. The should be sued for slander for giving our town such a bad name. At this point they KNOW of the error, and refuse to correct it, just because its garnering exposure for them.
  • Mary Mae · 10 months ago
go ahead and sue - natchez has no shortage of unemployed lawyers - but you better be sure it is this site that made the supposed error - my suspicion is that the 600,000,000 is on the mayor's conference report - if that is the case, it is probably the number used to calculate the pork - and it might be the number natchez gets

personally, if this had to be reported to your paper, they are not doing their job - it took mary mae in another state to call her relative in natchez to get this brought to their attention - kinda sad

rather than accuse - your paper should research where the error was made - and if the error was accidental

    mtnmadman and shams:

were you born yesterday or did you just crawl out form under a rock? $600 million typo aside, you need to read up on American history. Remember Jim Crow? Separate but "Equal"? Code Noir? Historically Black Colleges and Universities were once the only option for African Americans seeking higher education. So thank people like Gov. Wallace for sending national guard troops to keep African American students out of the University of Alabama when the schools were federally desegragated.

Do you know what "Racism" is? Ever since the first White person stepped foot on this land, there have been those that use their power to keep people of color in submission to whites. Generations of African Americans have struggled against these forces just to be able to have the opportunity to have the "inalienable rights" afforded "Americans" in the Constitution. That is why, in this county at least, only "whites" can be "racists". Anyone can be prejudiced, ignorant, or brainwashed by racial stereotypes. "You rob us, carjack us..." Who is "you" and who is "us" ? Are There no white criminals? Are people of color not victims of crimes? Are there no non-white police officers who must fear for their lives while trying to protect their families and communities?

By the way... What "rights" have you "lost"? Last time I checked white people made the laws in this country (unless you count the few executive orders issued by Pres. Obama in his 3 weeks in office). Be proud to be whoever and whatever you are but

    PLEASE...READ A BOOK!!!

This project won't create any new jobs. Anytime that the govt taxes the citizens and uses the money to "create" a job, at the same a job which would otherwise have been created (in the private sector) ceases to exist, or never exists in the first place.

To quote the economist Frederick Bastiat:

"this feverish activity [the government creating jobs]... attracts everyone's eye and is what is seen; the people applaud, marvel at the beauty and ease of the procedure, and demand its repetition and extension. What is not seen is that an equal number of jobs, probably more useful, have been prevented from being created in the rest of [the country]."

GREAT. What ever happened to rebuilding of the World Trade Center? Why are we spending money on this worhtless pork when we have a 16 acre hole in the ground that's been there since 2001 ??? That's 11.2 million square feet of office space that's been missing for over 8 years, think of how many jobs would be created by building the WTC and then filling them with working people.
  • Helen C · 10 months ago
this is something that should be built with private dontations, from those so included. As for me, no thanks! It is not essential, and not even wanted by most tax payers.
  • MeanDean · 10 months ago
The Natchez Democrat article says it will only cost $3.1 million to connect the two trails with a 1 or 2 mile long trail.

This raises the question, what, we're giving them $$ and they don't know the distance?

And let's just say it is $3 mil for 1.5 miles ... that's almost $380 a FOOT to build this trail. To me, that's awfully expensive pea gravel, mulch and/or concrete!
  • Angelica · 10 months ago
Well well..here we go again, I have nothing against making anything better if it is truly needed. That is what is wrong with this country now...frugal spending..we as American's are being told to save our money, don't just blow it on things that are not needed, yet these cities as I see it are spending it on unneccesary things. I mean come onnnnnnnnn...how would a trail bring money into Natchez??? Will there be stores there to sell slavery items from hundreds of years ago. As I see it, if it is built I give it 3 yrs and it would be so vandalized there would have to be another grant or loan to improve it again. I grew up in Natchez, and it was once a beautiful place, nice clean neighborhoods, now when I go and visit my dad in his home where I grew up it reminds me of the tv shows you see from what they say is the HOOD. Come on Natchez, why not spend some money to inprove drainage in these subdivisions, and build a new jail that would hold all these criminals and not put them back on the streets. And might I add while there in jail, why not use them to build this trail since they have nothing better to do than destroy and deal drugs, maybe when they have to do some phyisical labor it would be more appreciated because of there blood sweat and tears. While I recently visited my dad it had rained, and as usual the street flooded...this has been going on for over 30yrs...it is in the Roselawn Subdivision, and anyone that has or now lives there knows what I'm talking about. America has a black president now...so why not stop with the poor pitiful us syndrome....get over it...move on...the slave days are long gone, and the white generation can't move on because it is constinately rubbed in our faces. How can a nation move forward when the slave days can't be put behind them. Oh..and by the way...if ur r black and were born in the great USA ur an American, not an African American, unless u were born in Africa and came to America....go figure...
  • Politicalbipolar · 10 months ago
Perhaps, valid permanent jobs for people of all races might be money better spent. Maybe a factory loan, paid back after time building something again... A new American Steel industry, electronics industry or you name it. Perhaps then, the successful persons of any said race, could donate to such a worthy project... However, to spend this kind of money on tourism when most lower and middle class Americans can't afford to travel is lunacy. Of course maybe I am wrong, those fine jobs as cleaners and ticket takers at 7 bucks an hour will increase the quality of life for so many families. This stuff is a crazy dream, nightmare. BTW..... 600,000 dollars can employ 7 people for a year, with full health care for their families.... imagine what a trillion dollars should be able to do,
  • Myke · 10 months ago
If nothing else I would just like to see the receipts and the bids on what this costs. The bid will go to one of their donors to their campaign no matter what the bids are. And more than likely they will have an overrun. I do am sick of this racial talk. I have never been a racist. Americans are not racists. We have allowed people of all races to immigrate to this country. And now even have Islamist who demonstrate and say all Infidels must die.

Slavery was wrong but two wrongs do not make a right.
Lincoln would agree; Obama would not. There is a huge difference in philosophy.
Lincoln pressed for unity; Obama divides us by going against the spirit of the constitution with “big (socialized) government”. All Americans need to celebrate their American heritage and that means individual freedom for all. Placating and pacifying descendants of victims of years past has gone on too long and it is time to move on. We have a President of the ethnic persuasion which should put this to bed but instead, it intensifies. Many American families are broken in the inner cities. Fix that and the ghettos go away. Fathers need to take responsibility and embrace our American culture of putting children and family first. The American dream is not about money it is about having the privilege and the pride of honoring our responsibility as Americans; together, one nation under God. Government is only there to ensure our freedom is enabled to the fullest and to be realized by every American regardless of race. It is time to stop celebrating bondage as a justification for entitlements and begin anew. Celebrate our freedom before it evaporates; together. For that we make no apologies. The country is what you make it; seize the opportunity of the future and be free of the bondage of the past.
  • James · 10 months ago
To be fair, if the real figure is $1M, the project is probably not terribly unreasonable, at least in comparison to some of the other pork in this bill.
  • Mark · 10 months ago
Any amount of money for this project could be better spent. If Natchez wants to fix the roads that's what they should ask for after presenting a indepth report. To hide it as a Historic Trail is a cheap shot. Natchez does need repair, but a lot of cities and towns in MS do. Making our youth stay in school and get a real education (if you can't do that grade level reading & math you get left behind). America needs to get off the welfare system the Democrats foster.

One guy bids $2700 and doesn't even measure up the job.

The third guy gets the job. $1,000 is for him, $1,000 is for the congressman, and $700 goes to the first bidder to do the job.

Can you Please Help me find a way to save the house my daughter left behind with my son-in-law after losing her battle with Breast cancer..

    Hello,

My name is Sandra Vincent; I am originally from York, Pa. but now I reside in Richardson, TX. (1603 Woodoak Dr. Richardson TX 75082) I am 66 years of age; my only income is Social Security. I have no savings of any kind and no other retirement income. I am trying to save a house I share with my son-in-law after losing my daughter to cancer a few years back.

I know this is a long shot but I thought I would reach out to others and see if there were any options for buying a little more time until other funds or options might become available. I realize the likelihood of receiving any help might not be there but I thought I would try. This house was very dear to my daughter and son-in-law.

    Some History;

I moved to Dallas to be with my daughter, I no longer had work and the last remaining member of my family, my sister, passed away, so I packed up and moved and hoped to start a new life in Dallas. Everything was going well, I found a job shortly after coming to Dallas, bought a new car and lived with my daughter in her apartment. Michelle was working two jobs and going to school. Michelle was dating a man named Allen who she was very fond of, he had found a really good job working in IT Telecom Helpdesk for J. C. Penney in their Corporate office and after her graduation they talked of marriage and wanted to get a house big enough for all 3 of us, because we all got along quite well.

Michelle was a Navy Seabee/carpenter for 5 years so she wanted a fixer upper with hopes of getting married and having a family. Michelle found this house in Richardson, TX, and she loved it and thought it would be a good place to start. However, although they started a lot of repair projects, such as painting, ceiling fans, some new doors, cutting down trees etc. all seemed to slow down to a halt when Michelle discovered she had breast cancer. I thought maybe she had a good chance of surviving as I am a breast cancer survivor myself of over 20 years.

The doctors she was seeing gave her a very poor outcome, so my soon to be son-in-law Allen started researching Cancer on the internet in order to buy her more time. Nothing was working, Michelle had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and than a mastectomy removing the right breast. Another small surgery to remove even more cancer, after numerous rounds of radiation, the cancer was metastatic moving to the bones and spine. Michelle was spending quite a bit of time in the hospital while Allen and I and other church people kept vigilance at her bedside. Long story short, Michelle had a short time to live, my son in law found an experimental treatment www.IPTQ.com the treatment held a lot of promise for Michelle but the only person who was using this treatment was in Atlanta, GA. Michelle went to Atlanta and did OK the first few days, but the guy treating her was deceptive in his skills and grossly overdosed her on Methyltrexate. Because of the overdose Michelle suffered with failed kidneys, septic shock and passed away of congestive heart failure on Christmas Day a few years ago.

My son-in-law and I were both at the hospital when Michelle passed away, it was horrible losing my daughter but my son-in-law took it very hard. Although he tried to return to work he couldn’t deal with the grief and guilt he felt, lost his job and has had a very difficult time trying to find work since, he has been hospitalized many times for drug overdose and is mentally and emotionally disabled still. He has been trying to continue the work on the house in memory of my daughter, while being under psychiatric care and on several meds dealing with PTSD, anxiety disorder, as well as many side effects from the meds he is currently on.

    At Present;

Currently, he has just been approved for disability, but we are behind on the mortgage 6+ months and Wells Fargo is threatening to start the foreclosure process on us which can happen in 20-30 days now after receiving there demand letter. I did take early retirement, no longer able to deal with the traffic, I have been basically taking care of Allen and in so doing, have used up all my funds, maxed out every Credit Card, hoping that I would find work, Allen would get well and find and keep work also. None of which happened. There are days Allen is too depressed to get up out of bed and other days he seems to do better and works on the house finishing what ever he starts however if someone or something upsets him he is back in a very depressed state for days.

The house still needs many repairs, wiring problems in the attic, no insulation, and the roof needs leaks and needs replacing, no yard, no fence, Inside flooring is bad and more. Allen has no one and we both have no where to go. The only way to survive is to find some way to get the house paid off or at least caught up until he gets on disability.

    Employment Options;

He has sent out thousands of resumes to no avail. Allen & I have been to many job fairs to no avail. The few who have called told both of us they have so many applying that they has a long list of qualifying questions such as; Good Credit, recent work history and experience, Active up to date Certifications, Retail and more. I have witnessed Allen on the phone begging for more time with no luck. Allen sued his ex employer with hope of clearing his name and getting his job back but is settled out of the Sherman federal court house. (Civil Action No. 4:05CV238)

Allen has expressed interest in Writing and making short films because he can work at it like small projects, starting and stopping as he needs in his condition. out of the house but I don’t know if he could make any money with that type of work or not. I was hoping to get some type of work as I guess it’s the worst time to hunt work, considering the economy, and the fact that I no longer could pay my bills, my Credit rating is so low that it is now preventing me from getting work.

    Seeking other help;

I and Allen have tried many Charities and organizations to get help, have gotten help with food but they can only do so much. I have always paid all my bills, always had a job, and provided for my child, and I am not used to being this destitute. I want to stay in the house; I have a few pets, one of which was my daughter’s rat terrier named Sassy. With my present financial situation, I probably couldn’t find other housing because of income and credit. I really need to keep this house and not be homeless. Allen has called Wells Fargo Countless times begging them for more time or some type of Loan Modification etc. but they won’t work with him or what little Income I bring in with Social Security.

Our only way out at present is to get out from under the mortgage; I might mention we are in an upside down situation with the mortgage. The appraised value of the house is more than it could sell for, so getting rid of the house is impossible and if we did, we would not have any money left to move anywhere else after paying off the mortgage. With no mortgage payment or at least one delayed long enough for Allen to receive disability funds and what I receive on my Social Security I feel very confident; we could pay the monthly bills and stay in the home my daughter loved. I am still actively seeking work but to no avail at present.

We have several small dogs and birds that help keep both Allen and I from going nuts, they are like children and to loose one of them would be very hard. I realize this is a long letter, but I had to give you some background to show you that I have been trying to stay afloat, but I am now drowning. I have no family to help with anything. If you know of anything more that I can do or any other programs that will help me survive this situation, please let me know ASAP. The house in an FHA 30 Year Fixed loan, at 6.5%, monthly payment amount of around $1230.00 and payoff of around $135,000 counting the 12,274.22 late payments.

If you desire anymore information of any kind, or need to send paper work to be filled out, please write me at reaxe@yahoo.com or mail to: Sandra L. Vincent, P. O. Box 852094, Richardson, TX 75085-0294.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Sincerely,

    Sandra L. Vincent

    972.234.9351

Michelle’s testimony, just moments before her baptism.

I share with you today, as briefly as possible, my calling from the Lord. I have had what you would call a "Wake-up call". I have always believed in God, but until this time that belief has held no meaning - who was He, and what was I to do? I never really pursued the answers until now. I always thought that being a good person who never meant to hurt anyone or anything intentionally was all that was needed to get to heaven. Oh, how wrong I was!

I have to say that I have thought about whether my getting sick was punishment for my fleshly past and disbelief. But then I realized that in my past I was completely ignorant of God, so how could I hold myself responsible for not knowing I needed to live with the divine Light inside me? And even though this illness could take my body at any time, I am at peace with it because I know that the Lord has given this suffering to me - not as a punishment, but as an awakening for starting my quest for the Kingdom.

I have now been born of God and mature I must, as quickly as possible. I realize that I may not finish my quest for the Kingdom before my flesh is taken. But again I am at peace because I know that even 1000 years of outer darkness with all of its sufferings will be a small price to pay for the eternity that awaits me.

A dear friend introduced me to the saints here in Irving about 6 months ago, and from the very first meeting I felt a fellowship that I have never felt before. To be honest it was a bit weird and made me a little uncomfortable. But after speaking with some brothers and especially some sisters, who are now my dear friends, I’ve realized that being uncomfortable was ok. I’ve learned a lot from them and the meetings, and have received a new way of looking at my life and my world.

Suddenly my things are not really important anymore, and the little issues, problems, etc., that come about every day are no longer bothersome. I’ve learned that the big things that happen to me are not necessarily my only means of gaining the Lord inwardly. They are an opportunity to do so, but hopefully the big things are few and far between. It is the little things that happen everyday that are my big opportunities to gain Christ, because they are constant.

I’ve learned that to walk with our Father in the Kingdom, all I have to do is ask Him in prayer. I know that I’m expected to fail, and fail I have, and that’s ok, because by failing I’m just given another opportunity to gain Him in asking Him for forgiveness. And on those rare days when no little or big things occur, I just pray and thank Him for a wonderful day.

As I was writing this, and reading it, and re-reading to be sure it contains all I wanted to say, I realized again how very simple it is to gain the Lord. Then I wondered how anything so gracious, glorious and rewarding could be so easy - BUT I’m not questioning it. This reminded me of a young brother who shared a few weeks back on a Lord's Day that he didn’t know why a mathematical equation worked in calculus; he just knew that it did and relied on it. That’s kind of what I’ve gotten out of how easy it is to gain the Lord.

All of this is adding up to something very special: Today I am going to be baptized, and I have my family and friends here to witness and celebrate this occasion with me. Today is the day that I kick Satan to the curb. He no longer has a hold over me, because I know that whatever may come my way, I can handle it because I have the Lord, my Savior and Friend, on my side, and that with all the support I have from my brothers and sisters, and from my family and friends, I won’t be able to lose for trying. So with that said, I say, "Bring it On!" I’m ready to make the most out of every opportunity I’m given towards my quest for the New Jerusalem.

As I get baptized today I want to thank the saints for taking me by the hand and helping me to see that it’s ok to be human as long as I live with the divine life inside me. It is now my responsibility to live each day using my new awareness of prayer and the consciousness of the Lord within me, because thanks to the Father, my ignorance of Him no longer exists.

"instead of being on the dole, these people get paid to do this job" If these people are already "on the dole" then they're already being paid, so now put them to work earning that money, don't come digging money out of my pocket to build some boondoggle trail. Why do the American people have a responsibility to encourage tourism to Natchez in the first place? If it had any kind of tourist appeal the people would go there already. There's nothing particularly interesting about my home town, but I don't expect taxpayers to build some outrageously priced Spanish Trail Interpretive Center to try and get people to come to Parowan, Utah!

$60K would be okay, even better if the locals raised $75K them selves. I feel that if these projects have any merit then the local people need to pay for it, or most of it.

Lets do the math here. 600 million dollars, 65 jobs. It would be cheaper to retire those 65 people in million dollar homes with CEO golden parachute money. thatsw 9.2 million for each job. Come on, give me a break. That is best they can come up with for critical path spending.

great. why in the hell do we have to keep paying to make ethnic trails. sweeet. all colors of people walk by my house and that sidewalk didnt get any g.d. stimulus to pay to upgrade it. apparently you have to have a minority to get favor. why cant it be equal now? why must the government still spend money on trying to make it equal? at what point do we say "we are all Americans, and if you work hard and do well, we'll tax the fuck out of you?" do your job and do it well, and you'll be fine. dont work at all and live off the government, and you'll live well.

You've got to be kidding me. How about starting a caucasion congress caucus, or the national association for the advancement of white people while you're at it? Seriously, if this nation is ever going to get past the race issue stuff like this has to stop. No white folks alive now ever owned slaves, and no black folks alive ever were slaves in this country. The time to make white folks feel guilty about something that ended 140 years ago is long past.

    mtnmadman and shams:

were you born yesterday or did you just crawl out form under a rock?

  • shams · 9 months ago
sorry for the delay in my response... history and reading ARE NOT THE ISSUES here. i am fully aware of the jim crow "rules of segregation" and the impact on blacks throughout the years. what i challenge is the continued attempt by blacks to "segregate" themselves when it's politically convenient. e.g......."AFRICAN-AMERICAN" are you AFRICAN or an AMERICAN? the same applies to all heritage specific LABELS!

Italian-Americans>>> Mexican-Americans, et. al. i don't refer to myself as a Bulgarian-American, yet my grandparents defected to america when they were 12 years old. if you were born in this country or naturalized......you are an AMERICAN, plain and simple. yet we do still have miss black america, black entertainment television, united? NEGRO? college fund? funny, i don't recall ever watching miss bulgarian america or bulgarian entertainment television??

funny too.... why is obama an AFRICAN-American?? isn't he half white also??

PLEASE... LOOK IN THE MIRROR SOON!

ps.... what rights have YOU lost? and do you really know how many blacks serve in the house/senate and help make THE RULES?? do your homework and you'll see!

Barak's mostly black because black genes are dominate and white genes are recessive - basic biology! A t the start of your 2nd paragraph YOU made the BIG mistake of all ..the first men
on earth were NOT white look at the modern places in the history of man see
many whitties besides the vistors??? EVER read the books that tell how poor
black slaves begain??? seems like the man was free and happy Then OTHER
BLACKS rounded them up and sold them soooo the first men to inslave Blacks
were..... come on you can get...here is a hint they were not WHITE in color OK OK
the answer is BLACKS you should take your own advice READ A BOOK

WHAT rights have I lost..as a young man fresh out of the ARMY {BTW most of the troops
I saw on 3 different Bases were WHITE} I tried to get several jobs in Dallas TX my first
BIG suprise was being toldat the US Post Office tAll of the full time jobs went to BLACKS
and WOMEN Many othersemployers told me that had to fufill a quota first..

WHITE people making the laws what a joke DEMOCRATS have been kissing your asses
for years anything to get the BLACK vote...OBAMA is not EVEN HALF BLACK he doesn't seem
to PROUD to be mostely white

The BLACK anything you needed has long out lasted its need ...and in the face of racism

we treat each other with respect when a black racist calls me old white honeky I call him a
stupid nigger I have never honked my horn for a black whore to come to me

lets talk about crime again maybe you should read a book MOST crime on BLACKS is from

anything like this on the trail
  • Chuck · 9 months ago
